Is Deutchland Über Alles still the national anthem of Germany? I didn't realize that it's apparently based on a piece by Haydn. I heard a piece today called Quartet in C Major (op. 76 #3) second movement and it was the same melody. It was a gorgeous piece; I shall have to get

Yes it is. But the lyrics from the first verse are certainly tabooed for normal thinking people. (Germany, germany over everything, over everything in the world)

yes the composer ist Franz Josef Haydn (1732-1809) and the lyrics are by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben (1798-1874).

Greetings Andreas

Yes it's still the anthem, with different words of course. The original words are even today misunderstood. The actual meaning is: Unite Germany Unite! (One country over the small states) alles (everything) meant in those days a central european area which is now called Germany. When these words were written there was in fact no Germany, only principalities. The meaning of the words were later digustingly abused by the nazis to Rule, Germany, rule over the world. They couldn't kill the melody, though ;o)

I can imagine. I used to play clarinet, but playing every Sunday morning in another of the nearby villages in front of a lot of old men somehow didn't appeal to me. Anyway, worse than the beer songs (which might have their are the 'Heimat' songs. The music is more or less the same - 3/4 all the way.
