LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) -
Sadness turned to rage against the military about a string of explosions at a huge arms cache set in the middle of a crowded Lagos neighborhood. The blasts and resulting panic left at least 600 dead.

As truly tragic as this story is, it raised a smile while listening to BBC radio when the father stated (very mater of fact)that 'his dead baby was put through a 95 degree boil wash, you should have seen the state of it when it came out'. This story has created a bit of a storm here in the UK, particularly as the 'press' are in the middle of a witch hunt with the government over the state of the National Health Service. Stories like this seem to be coming to the surface every day at the moment!

Baby James was born 17 weeks premature on Nov 17th and died in his parents arms an hour later. A funeral was planned for Dec 17th and the body was stored at the hospital mortuary, but when undertakers went to collect it on Dec 12th it was missing. The following day a worker at a laundary 13 miles from the hospital discovered a babys body on a conveyor belt. The parents were told James had probably been put on the floor while a morgue worker removed another body stored behind him in the cramped cabinet. Somebody had come along and picked up all the laundry and just picked up the baby and thrown it into the laundry basket. It was another 2 weeks before James was formally identified using DNA. He was finally cremated on Janury 3rd. A hospital spokesperson is quoted ' The cabinet where babies bodies are kept was right next to the linen basket. This is a very busy environment with a lot of movement of bodies in and out. The babys body had been put on the floor by the mortuary technician, while other babies bodies were either put in or taken out of the cabinet.' She went on to give an unreserved apology and said changes had since been made. Infant bodies were now placed in clear plastic boxes and kept in a seperate are from the linen basket.

A brain found in a filing cabinet? It would sound like Monty Python if the reality wasn't so awful.

Where I work, we also keep the dead babies in a cabinet. I don't know what their reason is, but our reason is that every six months, we send these dead babies, en masse, to a certain cemetery that is responsible for the disposal of said dead babies. At the time of the babies deaths, the parents signed a consent form for this. Mostly, the dead babies in question were miscarriages, but in some cases stillborn babies. I know this, because somehow I managed to have been volunteered to be in charge of this particular service, by my supervisor...Nim

Is it refrigerated? See, that's the source of my confusion. When I think of 'cabinet', I think of a place to store cans and boxes of non-perishable food on shelves (like a pantry, but you can't walk into it) and was certain that they needed to keep dead babies refrigerated.
