Hi!
How do you interpret the existance of the monkey on several songs on 'Amused To Death'? I'm eager to read!

If I may be forgiven for correcting (it's the biologist in me): Roger calls it a monkey too but it's actually an ape (gorilla, specifically), not a monkey. There are some significant anatomical differences, number of teeth etc., and the most obvious is that monkeys have tails while apes do not.
He uses it, I think, to signify humanity as basically an animal. The first scene in 2001 sets it up.

In addition to the other replys, you could if you wish get all 'original sin' here - the use of Eden in Perfect Sense, the repetition of the same mantra ('Memory is a stranger, 'etc.) by the perpetrators of 'evil' a few lines later. In 2001, the 'broken bone in his hand' is a weapon, and the link there is made with that fabulous cut; in the album, it's the submarine. It is from this original act that everything else developed.
Of course, you could turn this around, and think of WGW I-III as being the corruption of the 'innocent' - humanity in its original form, but if I were sticking with the original sin idea, I would put the Alien Prophet as our 'inner voices' - it is this that corrupts the innocent, while all the time it is attributed to some external source. Certainly, the aliens at the end of the album do not know what has happened to us.
Just a thought, off the top of my head.

I did read it here, once, a while ago.
I gather he wasn't very happy with Mr. Kubrick. However, as I'm a fan of both of them, I don't get my kicks hearing one of them slag the other one off, so...

Granted ATD is RW's best_solo_album, but I don't think it's his best work vocally or lyrically. I'd say he did his best stuff while in the Floyd. If he felt otherwise, he wouldn't be wishing for someone to help write songs.

Like Eliot just said.
Well, and we're back once more at the question what great art actually is, and the bloody artist is getting in the way as usual.
