The Roland Petit Ballet was performed in 1972-73 (at Marseilles, France in November 1972 and in Paris, France in January 1973.) There were three sections to this ballet and the last section (which contained four movements) was 'The Pink Floyd Ballet' featuring music by the the Floyd: One of the Days, Careful with that Axe Eugene, Obscured by Clouds/ When You're In, and Echoes.
The first two sections were firstly Allumez les Etoiles (Light by the Stars) - about a poet of the Russian Revolution (Vladimir Mayakovsky) and featuring music by Prokofiev, Shostakovich and Mussorgsky.
This was followed by the second section: La Rose Malade (The Sick Rose), in three movements, based on a poem by William Blake and featuring music by

I must admit ELP's Jerusalem is pretty damn good for a hymn. Although my first exposure to the song was Monty Python's 'Mattress Sketch'.

It's amazing how much of the first exposure to a lot of culture for many of us, came from Monty Python. Who can keep a straight face when gazing upon Sandro Botticelli's The Birth of Venus, or Aguste Rodin's The Kiss....
